Jazz in Nelson
On a per capita basis, Nelson boasts one of the most vibrant and exciting jazz scenes in Australasia, due in no small part to a hugely talented base of musicians, enthusiastic venue operators, and an extremely dedicated band of people working towards a common goal. That goal is to deliver the very best possible and to develop and foster not only the experienced musicians, but also the student talents of our school musicians.
The Nelson Jazz Club boasts a strong membership, at a time when other clubs are striving to maintain numbers. Weekly jazz has been a feature for many years and currently each Tuesday, rostered groups perform at the newly re-vamped Vic Mac’s Brewbar, a stunning venue supporting local live musicians also Saturday evenings and other times on demand. The Nelson Jazz Fest held annually usually Jan 2nd to Jan 8th, is rapidly looking to become NZ’s number one annual jazz festival, indeed in 2011 attendance topped all previous records. In the strong management hands of a professional organiser and hard-working committee, the festival has become the place to be for both performers and audience, some of whom arrange their annual holidays just to be part of this event.
